[My story] Who is Ricky?

I write code, run marathons, and create content.

Hey there!

I’m Ricky, someone with a unique mix of passions and expertise.

Quick note: If you find yourself asking, "How did I end up on this email list?" you either subscribed directly, downloaded a free product, or purchased a product from me.

To answer your question, allow me to give you an idea of who I am and what you can expect from my emails:

A bit about me, and how I can help you

I’m a software engineer (at Google):

My coding journey began at 14 years old in a high school classroom.

The only reason I stepped foot in that class was because of a computer game called Minecraft. My friends wanted to play online together, so I learned the basics of server hosting and computer networking. Along the way, I heard that “Java” was the programming language used to build it, and my school happened to offer a class on it. This led me to pursue my BS in Computer Science and Applied Mathematics.

Now it’s 10 years later, and I’m working at Google Lens as an iOS Engineer. I have a sharp eye for app design, which Apple users expect. Today, I work mainly on building polished user experiences for our iOS users on Google Lens.

Oh, and I’ve also helped people land their dream jobs in tech as software engineers through resume reviews and more.

I’m a lifelong (amateur) athlete:

As soon as I took my first steps as a toddler, my dad put a soccer ball at my feet, which is pretty typical of a Hispanic father like mine.

Even though I was on a travel team winning soccer tournaments, I wasn’t an “exceptional athlete” by any stretch of the imagination. I continued soccer long enough until I caught an interest for martial arts during my teenage years. This led me to train Tae-Kwon-Do and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

But most recently, I’ve caught the running bug. In 2024, I ran over 10 races, including 2 marathons, with a personal record of 3:59:47. Now in 2025, I’m training to beat that time in the NYC Marathon while also training for NYC HYROX.

Reply to this email if you’d like me to explain my training regimen.

I’m a content creator:

Over the years I’ve found immense value from creators online.

Part of me feels forever indebted to them. That’s why I’ve decided to share my own stories on the internet. This is a creative outlet for me to inspire others who already have or wish to take a similar path as mine.

Educational content is also an outlet for entrepreneurship. With a personal brand and online audience, I’m able to validate, build, and sell products with digital leverage (thanks to Naval for that idea).

Closing Thoughts

Over the years, people have found my paths motivating and inspiring. Whether that’s landing your dream job as a software engineer at Apple, or running your first marathon in New York City. I simply want to broaden my reach and help others through this written medium.

Ricky
